"HOUND"
Before you and I were together,
I guarded my heart like an old dog,
protective of the way it shuffled,
how it always kept its head down.
I could never trust it off leash,
sweeping its mouth with my finger,
making sure it wasn't trying to swallow
something too large for its own good.
But now my heart is something we are
both responsible for: its daily walks,
its happy tongue, its round tummy,
the jingling song its tags make
when it comes through the door,
finally finally finally home. |
